What can you add to a list of Manor Memories?
We want to compile a list to share it at the Reunion, as well as post on the "Remember When" page of our site. Below are just a few of those unforgetable things that some have submitted so far. If you have a memory or two - reply to this message, or email anyone from the reunion committee. ;D
So, c'mon. Add to the memories!
We want to compile a list to share it at the Reunion, as well as post on the "Remember When" page of our site. Below are just a few of those unforgetable things that some have submitted so far. If you have a memory or two - reply to this message, or email anyone from the reunion committee. ;D
- Remember gasoline at 19 cents a gallon at the Flying A station on Washinghton Ave near Fargo?
- Remember 1/2 price Thursdays at Foster Freeze?
- Remember the gas leak at school during our Freshman or Sophomore year that gave us an extra week of vacation?
- Remember when our parents used to say "I remember when we could buy a whole bag of candy for a nickel" and it was as hard to believe as when we tell
our kids that for 25 cents we could go to the Lorenzo Theater, see two movies and still have money for a soda or bag of popcorn? - I bet you remember a day in 5th grade, when the principal came over the PA system, just before lunch, to tell us that President Kennedy had been shot in Dallas?
- Remember when being straight was being honest and being gay was being happy?
- Remember filmstrip and movie projectors in our classrooms? (Your kids don't.)
- Remember when we were first allowed to wear pant suits at Marina? No colored stockings but, as I recall, fish nets were ok. Go figure. And the guys hair couldn't touch their collar or they got suspended.
- I remember Porky's Pizza dollar night on Wednesday nights. A large cheese pizza for a dollar. Toppings were 25 cents each. I could (and did) eat a whole pizza by myself....many a time.
- I remember going to Washington Manor Jr. High with nylons and a garter belt and not yet being able to shave my legs. The hair was all squished down under the stockings! Lovely.
- How about when they allowed hamburgers in school. Boy was that a treat. I've never tasted anything like them since. They were actually the worst tasting things with a funny texture. They had that strange after taste. I think we just bought them because they were "hamburgers".
- When Kennedy was shot, I was walking home from Dayton school. I'd just crossed Wiley St when someone told those of us who were walking home he'd been shot and had just died. I started to cry and couldn't stop. I think it was a reaction to the adults crying and being upset because I couldn't have really been that knowledgeable about Kennedy at that age.
- I remember year after year walking up to the drug store and picking out a really ugly vase for my mom for her birthday or Christmas. She always acted like she loved them but I can remember a couple of them and they were actually really ugly. I think I just went for BIG because it looked like I spent more money.
- Remember having to kneel down to see if your skirt was too short? How about the first time one of the guys actually grew a mustache? I remember (I think it was) Tillitson & Bacigalupi growing a beard also.
- Remember putting 50 cents to a dollar's worth of gas in the car and cruzin' the strip all night?
- Remember when there were actually greenhouses on the site that is now The GreenHouse Shopping Center?
- Remember when the Miami Dolphins actually went to Stenzel Park to practice during the week before they played the Raiders? Bob Griese, Larry Csonka, Manny Fernandez. Wow.
So, c'mon. Add to the memories!
